Holy Week: The Week of Forgiveness

A time of grace to receive and offer forgiveness

Holy Week is the heart of the liturgical year, the most intense and profound time of Christian life. In it, the Church leads us to contemplate the final steps of Jesus, from His entry into Jerusalem to His Passion, death, and Resurrection. It is a journey marked by love taken to its fullest extent, where forgiveness is revealed as the highest expression of God’s mercy.

To live Holy Week as a “Week of Forgiveness” means entering into this mystery with an open heart, ready to receive the grace of reconciliation and to allow the love of Christ to transform our wounds into new life.

A love given to the very end

Throughout Holy Week, we accompany Jesus in deeply meaningful moments. At the Last Supper, He becomes nourishment and washes the disciples’ feet, teaching the way of service and humility. In Gethsemane, He experiences anguish and solitude, yet remains faithful to the Father. On the cross, He gives everything.

It is on the cross that forgiveness reaches its most radical expression. In the face of violence and injustice, Jesus does not respond with condemnation, but with mercy: “Father, forgive them.” His love breaks the cycle of hatred and opens a new path for all humanity.

The forgiveness born from the cross

The cross is not only a sign of suffering, but a source of life. In it, love conquers sin, mercy overcomes guilt, and forgiveness opens the doors to hope.

To contemplate the crucified Jesus is to recognize that we are deeply loved, even in our weaknesses. It is to discover that God never tires of us and always offers us the chance to begin again.

The forgiveness that flows from the cross is not theoretical, but real. It reaches every person, every story, every wound. It is a forgiveness that restores, heals, and rebuilds.

An invitation to reconciliation

Holy Week is also a personal call. It is not enough to contemplate Christ’s love, we must receive it and live it.

This is a privileged time to review our relationships, acknowledge our faults, and take concrete steps toward reconciliation. There may be words that need to be spoken, forgiveness that needs to be asked, gestures of closeness that require courage.

Forgiving is not always easy, but it is a path to freedom. When we choose to forgive, we break the chains of resentment and open space for peace.

Walking toward the Resurrection

Holy Week does not end at the cross. It leads us to the joy of the Resurrection. The forgiveness lived along this path prepares the heart to receive the new life Christ offers.

A reconciled heart is able to recognize signs of the Resurrection in daily life: in inner peace, renewed relationships, and hope reborn.

Living the Week of Forgiveness

In this holy time, we are invited to make Holy Week a true “Week of Forgiveness”. A time to return to what is essential, to rediscover God, and to rebuild relationships.

May every celebration, every moment of prayer, and every concrete gesture draw us closer to the Heart of Christ. And as we reach Easter, may we experience the joy of those who have received mercy and turned it into forgiveness offered to others.

In this way, our lives will become a living witness of the love that conquers evil and renews the world.
